Description
Seven Sacrament Fonts, led by Dr Dominic Summers, 3rd September 10.30-16.30.
The seven sacrament font is an enigmatic and almost entirely East Anglian phenomenon. 42 fonts survive, all dating from c1450-c1540: 26 in Norfolk, 14 in Suffolk and 2 outliers – one in Kent and the other in Somerset. They are fascinating objects, complex and often very beautiful, from which we can learn much about medieval religion and society. The tour will be led by Dr Dominic Summers who developed an interest in seven sacrament fonts when studying at UEA. He wrote a dissertation on their craftsmanship and production for his MA, in 2006, before going on to research late medieval church towers in Norfolk for his PhD.
