Between 2022 and 2023, Oxford Archaeology discovered a range of prehistoric remains along the route of a cable installed to service Ørsted’s Hornsea Three Project Three offshore wind farm. The route extended from Stoke Holy Cross south of Norwich to Weybourne on the north Norfolk coast.
One of the most significant discoveries was a large, circular monument at Ringland which dated to the Early Neolithic. The monument probably had a funerary function, and intriguingly, the ditches of the monument were lined with timbers. The investigation also uncovered several enigmatic Bronze Age burnt mounds which produced a range of organic objects, including a worked oak trunk. A large Middle Bronze Age enclosure was additionally recorded near to Reepham, of a type increasingly identified across Norfolk and the wider region.
This talk will provide an overview of the main prehistoric discoveries along the scheme, placing the evidence within its local and regional contexts and outline how the project’s results will contribute to an improved understanding of prehistoric Norfolk.
