The NNAS Library

The NNAS Library Collections are extensive, and include materials collected throughout its history. Researchers may find it useful to consult the online catalogue before planning a visit.

The NNAS Library

Using the library

The Library is based at the Norfolk Record Office, County Hall, Norwich. The library is open for use during normal NRO hours. Please consult the NRO website for current times. PLEASE NOTE that the catalogue is currently being updated to record new book positions.

The Library contains books, journals and pamphlets of local interest as well as those from many other historical and archaeological groups across the rest of the country. There are also long runs of many county and national archaeological journals and some early photographs and pictures. The Society’s rich manuscript collections have been deposited in the Norfolk Record Office, accessible through their own catalogue.

The Society is very pleased to announce that the entire catalogue of the Library may now be consulted online. We hope that this will help researchers in discovering and locating potentially useful material prior to arranging any visit.

Using the NNAS online catalogue

In order to search the catalogue, click on the item ‘Library search’ on the right-hand menu. Help with searching can be found on the catalogue webpage, but please also take note of the following points:

  • The quickest way to search the catalogue is usually to insert the name of the author or the main words of the title of the item or subject in the ‘Author Surname’ box or the ‘Book Title includes’ box and then click on Search.
  • If this is unsuccessful, try alternatives in the Keywords section.
  • The Accession Number consists of two parts and (for the majority) these begin with four zeros followed by a forward slash and then the catalogue number, which contains up to five digits. However from 2006 the first four digits are usually the year of accession.
  • A number of acronyms have been used in constructing the catalogue, as follows:CAS/S of A: Congress of Archaeological Societies in Union with the Society of Antiquaries
    CBA: Council for British Archaeology
    EAA: East Anglian Archaeology
    HMSO: Her Majesty’s Stationary Office
    NA: Norfolk Archaeology
NAHRG: Norfolk Archaeological and Historical Research Group
    NARG: Norfolk Archaeological Rescue Group
    NFHS: Norfolk Family History Society
    NG: Norfolk Genealogy
    NIAS: Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society
NNAS: Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society
NNGS: Norfolk and Norwich Genealogical Society
    NRS: Norfolk Record Society
Proc. Soc. Antiq.: Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries
ROB: Rijkdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (Journals of Netherlands Archaeology)
SPAB: Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings

We would be most grateful if users could inform the Librarian of any difficulties that they experience using the online catalogue, or of any errors found.
